= off to a good start !

WHY AN ARTS BLOCK?

The simple answer is ...

BECAUSE IT WORKS !

(AND WE NEED IT)

The old historical downtown core of Caledonia is slowly decaying into ruins. There are empty storefronts owned by uninvolved and absentee landlords that are in such a poor state of repair that they are unatractive and unrealistically priced to attract potential renters. There are derelict buildings that require massive amounts of restoration. The main street desperately needs to be made more attractive and pedestrian friendly.

Something has to be done to revitalize the downtown core that will capitalize on the uniqueness of this area to attract more visitors and the commerce they could bring this sad, controversial, but potentially beautiful and vibrant little town.

We are inspired by the examples of other communities who were in a similar situation. Hamilton's new James Street North Art District is turning the old north end around from a high crime, drug dealing and prostitution center into a thriving commercial district newly populated with 29 unique art galleries, community art resource centers, several bistros and specialty restaurants, bars and entertainment lounges.

Brantford is also in the early stages of revitalization with the establishment of an Brantford Arts Block there.

We could and should do it here in Haldimand and Caledonia too!

Our core goal is the creation of a downtown community arts centre or centers which will provide exhibition, performance, studio and work space for artists of all description and skill levels. The centre will also act as an organizing and producing facility, partnering with other organizations to showcase artists in unique settings around Caledonia and Haldimand County. Another important part of our mandate is education regarding the importance of the arts, especially inspiring and assisting young, emerging and innovative artists in any field.

The gallery and future community arts centre is hoped to become a permanent and sustainable institution in the Haldimand area for unifying and encouraging the arts and cultural community, while stimulating creative expression in all who practice, appreciate or have yet to discover the arts.

Our Goals are:

To evolve into a center for learning, tolerance, dialogue and understanding.
To educate and increase the public's understanding and appreciation of the arts by providing performances of an artistic nature in public places, senior citizens homes, churches, community centres and educational institutions and by providing seminars on topics relating to such performances.

To provide instructional seminars on topics related to the performing and visual arts.

To produce visual and performing arts festivals for the purposes of educating and advancing the public's understanding and appreciation of performing arts and to educate artists through participation in such festivals, events and related workshops.

A New Cultural District

The Caledonia Arts Block aspires to operate a community arts centre or centres, starting with a partnership with the Grand River Gallery as part of Downtown Caledonia's larger transformation into what we hope to build into the cultural centre of Haldimand. We would like to encourage private, not-for-profit and public organizations partner to share resourses and create a vibrant culture oriented district that would benefit local citizens and tourists alike.

With an active and engaging program of arts, culture, crafts, music and live performance, the community arts centre will appeal to a broad section of the community and will attempt to remain sustainable through event and service fees, memberships and public and private donations.

"Culture-Led Regeneration is a multi-dimensional approach to the renewal or revitalization of a community wherein art, culture and creativity play a leading role in transformation. It is a practice focused on the confluence of creative people and dynamic places – intersections that stimulate, catalyze and drive the emergence of vital creative ecology's throughout cities and communities."

The Caledonia Arts Block is the result of creative thinking by members of the arts community who participated in the preliminary discussions regarding the formation of the Haldimand Artists Group and is a natural extension of those earlier efforts.

Currently a dialogue and consensus is emerging with the aim to bring real benefits to all our local artists and to the greater community.

WHAT IS AHA

?

AND WHAT CAN IT DO?

 All Haldimand Artists

The idea behind AHA! is one of assembling, enabling and giving voice and expression to the region's huge resource of creative individuals who are involved in some way with the arts.

It will bring together professional, student and amateur alike, and encompasses not only the visual arts, but the performing and musical arts as well.

As a motivated, transparent and publicly accountable "not for profit charitable organization", it will be possible to apply for the funding assistance of private and public institutions to help bring the new and necessary programs that artists are by experience and vocation best and most intimately acquainted with.

Here's just one example ....

Caledonia's Edinburough Square is in need of a new roof.

For generations the Square has been hosting individual art exhibitions for the cultural betterment and education of the community.

In partnering with the Square, the visual artists of AHA!nc  could present an Art Festival and sale on the grounds of the Square and donate a percentage of the sales to aid with the fund raising for a new roof. In exchange, the Square might allow the artists to set up display on their grounds without a fee. Public grants and private donations would be very helpful in providing the funds needed for the advance advertising and promotion of such a proposed festival...

Here's another....

The "Old Mill" in Caledonia needs millions of dollars worth of renovation and retrofitting before it can be put to any use. It has the potential to be a major and unique tourist attraction for the community and has the added potential to house a permanent art gallery/retail art and performance facility...in fact, that is what the public decided would be a good use for the second floor of the Old Mill !

That will be a tremendous boost for the arts and artists locally and should be a motivating factor for our organized  involvement.

Fundraising will be the focus for many years until the work is done and the mill can operate as a cultural facility.

AHA!nc can take an active role and participate by organizing fairs and festivals and other fund raising drives to help bring this about.

A working partnership with the Old Mill Committee will benefit the whole community.

It will take a bit of money to pay for the registration process and approval for this not for profit status, and the Grand River Gallery is now collecting donations from it's sales to help pay for those fees.

In the meantime, a board of directors is also being created by individuals from the art community to provide the responsible leadership, ideas and accountability that such an undertaking requires.

If you, gentle reader, feel that you may have the skills and expertice to contribute to this board we would like love to hear from you.

 the GRAND RIVER GALLERY

The Grand River Gallery is just one example of a partnership between a commercial enterprise and a not for profit group for the overall improvement of the community. We now donate free space to all of the visual artists residing in or near the community, and are actively making our joint presence felt through our presentation and active promotion on the world wide web.

By sponsoring events such as the recent "Stampede Days" we encourage the marketing of artist works and provide exposure for artists and their works to new and old  visitors to the community.

The gallery serves as a focal point in spearheading and actively pursuing the fundraising for the formation of AHA!nc, a new non profit organization whose mission it will be to assist in the revitalization of Caledonia's historic downtown core by promoting and enabling the display, sale and expression of all the arts and artists from within the region.

As a newly registered business, the Gallery has elected NOT to register for the HST tax since it's implementation on July 1st 2010.

Although the business must now PAY the HST on ALL of it's purchases, resulting in a 13% instant increase in costs, we are informing and asking our retail customers to DONATE one half of what the HST would have been with the funds going directly towards the legal fees needed for non profit corporate registration. There has been tremendoes support for this honest approach by most of the customers since starting on this path. Eventual registration is thereby assured in time.
